PERFORMANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY
UNDERSTANDING WHERE WE ARE AS A REGION
EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE HIGHER EDUCATION IMPACT
Annually, out of over 13,000 8th graders in the El Paso region who go on to complete high school, more than 10,000 fail to enroll in or complete college and less than 3,000 receive a higher education degree.
EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE ECONOMIC IMPACT
U.S. data indicates that a college graduate will earn approximately $1 million more in lifetime earnings than a high school graduate. Collectively at least 8,000 El Paso area high school graduates annually will forgo potentially $8 billion in lifetime earnings by not completing college.
EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FROM THE
2021 STAAR TESTS
In 2019, El Paso’s public-school students, were on an upward trajectory academically, in some cases meeting or exceeding the state average. Then the pandemic upended learning and created unprecedented challenges for both students and educators. Now they need our support as they work to reverse the learning gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although only 60 percent of El Paso students took the STAAR test in 2021, compared to 2019, the results show students have experienced significantly greater COVID learning gaps than their peers across Texas, and the learning gains our region had been making have been lost.
As a community, we cannot ignore the “COVID learning gap.” We must reverse it, and as quickly as possible. If we care about our children’s future - and our region’s economic future– we must work together to help students get back to improving their academic readiness reflected in their test scores, their graduation rate, and their level of educational attainment.
The below data from the 2021 STAAR tests highlight the learning challenges being faced by students in our region.

HOW YOUR SCHOOL COMPARES TO OTHERS
School performance varies across the region and within each Independent School District. Unfortunately, this shouldn't be the case if we want every child to have the same high-quality education.
