Sylvia Hopp
Retired Superintendent of San Elizario Independent School District
Sylvia Hopp was appointed Superintendent of the San Elizario Independent School District on December 14, 2011 by the Board of Trustees. She officially began her tenure as Superintendent on January 2, 2012.
Mrs. Hopp, however, was already a familiar face in San Elizario ISD having worked in the district for eleven years as well as serving as interim superintendent prior to her appointment. At San Elizario ISD, Mrs. Hopp has served as Principal at Alarcon and Borrego Elementary Schools and as Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Instruction.
She began her career as a special education teacher with El Paso ISD at Clardy Elementary, Alta Vista Elementary and McArthur Middle Schools. While at El Paso ISD, Hopp also held the positions of Assistant Principal at Carlos Rivera Elementary, Principal at Hawkins Elementary, Instructional Consultant, Staff Developer, Director of Elementary Personnel, and Executive Director for the Franklin/Coronado HS feeder patterns.
She earned both her bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Texas at El Paso. Her certifications include Superintendent, Mid Management Administrator, Elementary Self-Contained, Bilingual/ESL and Mentally Retarded certifications.
In 2015, Mrs. Hopp was named Region 19 Superintendent of the Year and was the Top Five Finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year.
She is married to Charles Hopp, a retired educator who currently works for Southwest Airlines.
Mrs. Hopp retired in June 2017 after 42 years of service in education.
San Elizario Independent School District is located in El Paso County’s lower valley. The district currently serves approximately 3900 students in grade levels Pre Pre-K to 12th grade at six different campuses: Loya Primary School; Alarcon, Borrego, and Sambrano Elementary Schools; Garcia-Enriquez Middle School; and San Elizario High School.
